On Friday, June 17, Pitney Bowes announced its donation of the NeighborhoodTrac™ Family Protection System to the state of Florida. The software system, which was developed by Group 1, aids in the identification of registered sex offenders residing near any given in-state street address. The system is housed on the Sexual Predators and Offenders branch of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Web site, and can be accessed at: http://www3.fdle.state.fl.us/sexual_predators.

It is estimated that 10% of the nation’s registered sex offenders are currently living in Florida. Previously, residents could only identify local threats by searching the state’s database of roughly 35,000 sex offenders using ZIP Codes or names of specific cities, counties, or registered offenders. In high-population areas, such searches could return hundreds of names, making it difficult to locate the most imminent threats. ZIP Code and county boundary lines compounded this problem for those living near them.

The geocoding technology developed by Group 1 added essential precision and simplicity to this process. Residents simply enter an in-state address into the NeighborhoodTrac™ Family Protection System, and the system returns a list of local offenders ranked by proximity. The cost of Pitney Bowes’s donation, in addition to the three years of Group 1 maintenance and updates that will accompany it gratis, is estimated to total more than a half million dollars.

For more information on this topic and to access other news on Group 1 and Pitney Bowes, please visit the Press Room on the Group 1 Web site, at http://www.g1.com/About/News/.
