The USPS has given us information on their new Enhanced Line of Travel (eLOT) sortation. The database
for coding eLOT is now available from the USPS - and we are gearing up to provide that information to you.
Here are the highlights: Effective April 2002, the present LOT database will no longer be provided by the USPS,
and beginning in June 2002, only the eLOT product will be available.
What does this mean to you? To answer that, let's look at how eLOT is going to be coded and
sorted. The coding product will take your ZIP Code, Carrier-ID, and ZIP+4 code against a database,
looking for a record where the Delivery Point Code (DPC) is in a range provided. If there is a match,
you pick up the appropriate eLOT code and Ascending/Descending indicator. If there is no match,
you access a Supplemental database to find a match. The supplemental file returns an eLOT ZIP+4
and DPC which you substitute into your key and attempt the first match again. YOU KEEP THE ORIGINAL
ZIP Code, ZIP+4 and DPC for printing and barcoding purposes but must use the eLOT ZIP+4 and DPC in the
sorting of the mail. This will require customers to add an additional 6-bytes to their name/address files.
The purpose of this 'Supplemental File' is to step back from building-specific and FIRM ZIP+4/DPC codes to the
street face ZIP+4/DPC codes so that the mail will be SORTED along the carrier's route but will not change the
printing (and barcoding) of the mail piece. To separate these two sets of ZIP+4 and DPC information, new fields a
are being added to MailStream Plus 6.3.3 to specify the new eLOT ZIP+4 and eLOT DPC. They will be used for the
sortation process, while the regular ZIP+4 and DPC will be used for reports and Mail.dat.
It is worth noting also that the proper sortation of LOT as well as eLOT has been clarified by the USPS: The
ZIP+4 information as well as the DPC should be included in the manipulation performed to support the Ascending/Descending
flag. If this is not done, then addresses such as PO BOXES, where individual ZIP+4 codes are assigned to each PO BOX
would not be changed by the A/D flag and would be incorrect, possibly voiding the entire Carrier Route discount.
