Be MUSIC Direct, formerly BMG Music, sought a solution to best sort, separate and sequence orders for their automated Gantry fulfillment system.

The Challenges

Automated Fulfillment

BE Music's state–of–the–art Gantry robotic "picking" solution successfully and efficiently handled approximately 95 percent of all the orders received by the company. However, the automated fulfillment system had difficulty processing back–to–back orders for CDs that were grouped in the same general area.

Legacy System Limitations

Be MUSIC’s mainframe programming resources were also scarce, so the company wasn't able to alter the legacy "first in, first out" order processing system to achieve a more efficient order flow.

Maintain Efficient Processing

Repeated attempts to sort the orders manually were also costly, time-consuming, prone to error, and ran counter to the overall effort to the automate the entire fulfillment process.

The Solution

Print Stream Engineering

Print stream for outgoing mail can be intercepted, manipulated and resequenced to boost cash flow. With modest programming, Be MUSIC was able to utilize StreamWeaver® to resequence the data to assure that similar orders were separated from dissimilar orders, which would allow the Gantry picking system to operate more efficiently.

The Benefits

Efficient Fulfillment

Since using StreamWeaver® to resequence orders, Be MUSIC has seen costs to fulfill an order drop by two-thirds and has reduced the need for manual fulfillment to less than two 2 percent of all orders. Even more, Be MUSIC is now shipping all orders the same day they are received.

Fewer Errors

With less reliance on manual fulfillment, the StreamWeaver® resequencing solution has also eliminated the errors and the cost of inaccurate shipments due to human error.
